American Samoa has declared a public health emergency after an outbreak of measles in the US territory, with one confirmed case and 31 suspected or probable cases. All the suspected cases are in children between 2 months and 13 years old. Those who test positive for the disease have been ordered to isolate for 21 days, while those who may have been exposed must quarantine for up to 21 days. American Samoa’s Department of Education, which serves 12,000 students, has closed all schools until Friday 12 May. In 2019, there were 12 cases and no deaths in American Samoa during a measles outbreak, while Samoa suffered more than 5,700 cases and 83 deaths, most among children under 5 years old.

New requirements have been set for travelers from American Samoa to Samoa. The Ministry of Health in Samoa has issued a special advisory stating that travelers must be vaccinated with a measles-containing vaccine before entering Samoa. They must present a legitimate vaccine certificate or note before boarding and upon arrival. All passengers must wear face masks at all times upon arrival and are advised to take preventive measures within the first seven days.
