On May 4th, Samoa joined the world in celebrating International Firefighters Day, a day set aside to recognize the important role that firefighters play in keeping communities safe. The day was marked with a parade in Apia, followed by a conference at the Taumeasina Island Resort, where the Minister of Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (S.F.E.S.A.), Faualo Harry Schuster, highlighted the importance of firefighters in society.

Speaking at the conference, Faualo said, “Happy International Firefighters Day to all firefighters in Samoa and around the globe.” He emphasized the need for various agencies to work together in responding to emergencies, stating that the conference was an opportunity to bring together Community, Health, Energy, Environment, and Infrastructure sectors and S.F.E.S.A. to mainstream and integrate their core functions to be able to work and respond together in times of emergencies.

The conference’s theme, “Desire, Courage and Ability to Serve Samoa and its vulnerable communities, through sectorial approach and National counterpart striving to save lives and properties,” highlights the dedication of firefighters to serve the country and its people. It also recognizes the sacrifices that firefighters make in the line of duty and their willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to keep others safe.

The celebrations began with a church service hosted at the Government Prayer House at Palisi on Wednesday evening, attended by Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, Members of Cabinet, Government Officials, and staff of the Samoa Police Services, S.F.E.S.A., and Office of the Electoral Commission. The event showcased the solidarity of the community and the government in acknowledging the essential role of firefighters in safeguarding Samoa.

International Firefighters Day is commemorated annually on May 4th, and it recognizes the bravery and selflessness of firefighters who risk their lives to protect their communities. This year’s celebration in Samoa shows appreciation for the firefighters’ service and acknowledges their contributions to society.

The government’s efforts to bring together various sectors to work in tandem with firefighters demonstrate the country’s commitment to building a safer Samoa. The celebrations remind us all of the critical roles that firefighters play in safeguarding our communities, and we must continue to support and honour their service.
