Samoa has marked a momentous occasion in its history with the launch of a new $60 Tala commemorative banknote, celebrating the nation’s 60th anniversary of independence. The banknote, unveiled during a special event attended by prominent figures including the Minister of Finance, reflects the country’s progress and honours significant individuals who have shaped Samoa’s journey.
The highlight of the commemorative banknote is its depiction of the first female Prime Minister of Samoa, the Honorable Fiame Naomi Mataafa. As Samoa’s new leader and a symbol of change, her portrait on the banknote represents a “NEW DAWN,” signifying a fresh start and a new era for the people of Samoa. This historic milestone is a testament to Samoa’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in leadership positions.
The reverse side of the banknote features the Honorable Fiame Mataafa Faumuina Mulinuu II, Samoa’s first Prime Minister, as he lowered the New Zealand Government flag during the country’s initial independence. The juxtaposition of the two leaders, a father and daughter both appointed to the office of Prime Minister within 60 years of independence, serves as a powerful reminder of Samoa’s progress and resilience.
In addition to the portraits, the banknote showcases the 60th Independence logo with the theme “Folau ma le Fa’atuatua” or “Sail with faith,” embodying the spirit of Samoa’s journey towards a brighter future. It also proudly features Samoa’s national motto “Fa’avae i Le Atua Samoa” or “Samoa is founded on God,” reflecting the strong cultural and religious values that underpin the nation.
Apart from its symbolic design, the $60 Tala banknote incorporates significant technical advancements to enhance security measures. The inclusion of a new updated window security thread in blue and green, a unique coloured banknote for easy denomination recognition, and a security watermark design featuring the national flower, Teuila, contribute to the banknote’s robust security features. Additionally, a 14.00mm gold iridescent band near the watermark adds an element of elegance. Notably, the banknote is also carbon neutral, reflecting Samoa’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The $60 Tala commemorative banknotes will be issued into circulation through commercial banks starting from May 31, 2023, and will be considered legal tender, similar to other banknotes and coins. However, as stocks are limited, they are expected to become highly sought-after collector’s items.
The successful realization of the commemorative banknote project was made possible through the close collaboration between the Central Bank of Samoa and De La Rue Currency of the United Kingdom. The Central Bank, along with its board, management, and staff, is commended for their efforts in celebrating Samoa’s 60 years of independence in a significant and memorable way.
The introduction of the $60 Tala banknote not only commemorates Samoa’s milestone but also highlights the achievements of Samoan women and their invaluable contributions to the nation. As the banknote enters circulation, it will serve as a reminder of Samoa’s progress, resilience, and the bright future that lies ahead.
Samoa’s commemorative banknote embodies the spirit of celebration and unity, encapsulating the nation’s journey of the past 60 years and the promising path ahead.
