The “Fautasi Race” stands as one of the grandest events during any Independence Celebration, capturing the essence of Samoan culture and the spirit of competition. This year’s race witnessed a thrilling showdown as five magnificent long boats took to the waters, each representing their respective villages and showcasing the prowess of their crews. Among the contenders were Tolotolo o Tamauli hailing from Savai’i, the renowned Don Bosco led by their esteemed skipper Zita Martel, the formidable Telefoni o Vainu’u, the spirited Little Rina representing Toamua, and the mighty Malisi.

However, all eyes were particularly fixed on the Don Bosco “fautasi” and its “Warrior Queen” skipper Zita Martel, who is known as the first and the only woman to have ever participated in a men’s sport. This race holds a special significance as it marks Martel’s last appearance as a skipper in a long boat race. Spectators were eager to witness the final display of Martel’s expertise and see if she could lead her team to victory one last time.

Tamaitai o Vaimasenu’u Zita – Sefo Martel, expressed her feeling after the race that she felt fantastic and it was a beautiful race. When asked about the intense competition and the unfolding events, Martel described it as a fiercely competitive race right from the beginning. It was a true test of experience, skill, and strength for all the participating teams.

Reflecting on a critical moment during the race, Martel emphasized the importance of decision-making as they approached the Mulinuu point. At that time, the three leading long boats were not only closely competing for first place but also closely positioned against one another. It was a pivotal moment where Martel had to make a decision for the safety of the team – to navigate the boat towards the south. This decision held significant consequences as they fell back in the placing and had to fight their way back to secure the 2nd place. Martel explained that maintaining their position without making the necessary adjustments would have resulted in a potential disaster. Her experience and expertise allowed her to make the crucial call, steering the boat in the right direction and ensuring the safety of the Don Bosco team.

In the end, Tolotolo o Tamauli claimed a convincing victory, securing first place in the race. Don Bosco and Telefoni o Vainu’u battled for 2nd and 3rd places towards the finish line. Little Rina captured the 4th place, while Malisi finished in last place.

In recognition of their remarkable efforts, all participating long boats were awarded monetary prizes. The victorious Tolotolo o Tamauli received the highest honour, earning an impressive $60,000 tala for their triumph.
