To become a Dame is to receive a prestigious honour or title bestowed by the British monarchy or, in Jacinda Ardern’s case, the New Zealand Order of Merit. Dames are typically women who have made significant contributions to fields such as the arts, sciences, public service, or philanthropy. This distinction carries immense prestige within the British honours system and represents a mark of distinction.

Appointments to the rank of Dame are made by the reigning monarch in the UK or, in New Zealand, by the Prime Minister with the approval of the King. Dames are often referred to as “DBE,” denoting their status as Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, one of the most renowned orders of chivalry in the United Kingdom.

Elevation to the title of Dame signifies exceptional achievement, service, or excellence in a particular field, highlighting an individual’s profound impact and contribution to society. It is a tremendous honour and often positions Dames as influential ambassadors, advocates, or representatives in their respective domains, leveraging their status and influence to drive positive change.

Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, was recently honoured with the prestigious title of Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit as part of King Charles’ Birthday Honours this year. This recognition commemorates her outstanding leadership during the mass shooting and the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting her remarkable dedication to New Zealand.

Despite her initial reservations about accepting the award, Ardern humbly acknowledged that it symbolises the collective experiences of all New Zealanders who faced these challenges together. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to her family, colleagues, and supporters who enabled her to effectively serve as Prime Minister.

Alongside Ardern, Wayne Smith, a renowned rugby coach, was also celebrated in the King’s Birthday Honours list for his significant contributions to New Zealand’s rugby teams, leading them to glorious World Cup victories.
