On Saturday, 24 June 2023, Palmerston North will be treated to a captivating Pasifika comedy-drama at Centrepoint Theatre. “Frangipani Perfume,” a brilliant creation by the talented playwright Makerita Urale, takes center stage, bringing to life the journey of three Samoan sisters who find themselves trapped in monotonous cleaning jobs. As they navigate their daily routines, their aspirations for a better life and cherished memories of their homeland intertwine, accompanied by the lighthearted banter and unbreakable bond that defines sisterhood.

Stepping into the roles of the three sisters are Siana Vagana, Seluvaia Iloahefaiva, and Jthan Morgan, a versatile cast that effortlessly transitions from down-to-earth domestic scenes filled with sisterly jesting to captivating, beautifully choreographed sequences.

Jthan emphasizes that while the play’s theatricality captivates audiences, its authenticity lies at its heart. “Frangipani Perfume tells the story of sisterhood, family, and the intricate tapestry of their identities that shape who they are.” The play also celebrates Pasifika women. “It fearlessly explores the challenges they face while simultaneously rejoicing in their resilience.”

Notably, “Frangipani Perfume” stands as the first Pacific play exclusively written by a woman for an all-woman cast. Director Sarai Perenise-Ropeti highlights the play’s timeless quality, despite its inception in the early 2000s. She shares her personal connection to the work, stating, “I first encountered Frangipani Perfume during high school, and it was a transformative experience. It was the first time I saw myself represented on stage and found relatability. Although written for Pasifika women by a Pasifika woman, its themes resonate with women from all walks of life.”
