Seuamuli Kome Robbie Lauano, an enterprising entrepreneur, has opened doors for Samoan farmers to export their taro to New Zealand. With support from Samoa’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) and the PACER Plus Implementation Unit, Lauano’s vision of empowering local farmers has come to life.
By cutting out middlemen and offering fair prices, Lauano ensured the financial stability of small farmers and ignited hope within the community. Over 2,000 kilograms of Samoan taro, benefiting from zero tariffs under the PACER Plus agreement, made their way to Papakura Wholesale Meats Direct in Auckland.
The response from consumers was overwhelming, reconnecting families with their cultural heritage and sparking a surge in demand. The impact on farmers like Iopu Ma’aolo and Avea Vaoga was substantial, providing them with increased income and opportunities for a brighter future.
Beyond the financial gains, this export signifies the revival of cultural identity and pride for Samoans abroad.
