A new language app specifically designed for learning Gagana Samoa, the Samoan language, has recently been launched in New Zealand. Spearheaded by Samoa Capital Radio in Wellington, the oldest Samoan radio station in Aotearoa, the app aims to bridge the gap for individuals interested in delving deeper into the language.

Robert Niko Aiono, Samoa’s Acting High Commissioner to New Zealand, commended the initiative, emphasizing its value in catering to the needs of Samoans born in New Zealand and around the world. Recognising the significance of Samoan as the third-most spoken language in New Zealand, Samoa Capital Radio initially considered Zoom language classes as a means to engage learners. However, they ultimately concluded that an app would provide a more accessible tool that could be utilized anytime and anywhere.

The development of the language app commenced in January and was described by Murray Faivalu, the social media manager of the radio station, as a “labour of love.” To ensure its accuracy and cultural sensitivity, an advisory panel was formed, including experts such as Dr. Niusila Eteuati, a lecturer from the National University of Samoa, and a language teacher from Samoa, alongside the Language Commission.

Faivalu expressed his hope that the app would empower users to overcome their hesitations and shyness when conversing or engaging in Samoan prayers. Particularly among the young Samoan population, many may possess some knowledge of the language but struggle to speak it fluently. This app aims to address that challenge.

The app covers the fundamentals of the Samoan language, including spelling, grammar, macron placement, and glottal stops. Additionally, audio components have been incorporated to aid users in understanding proper pronunciation. The inclusion of glottal stops and macrons is crucial for grasping the true meaning behind Samoan words, as reading the language without them can lead to a loss of intended significance.

The launch of this language app represents a significant step in preserving and promoting Gagana Samoa, offering a valuable resource for Samoan language learners in New Zealand and beyond.
