In a recent report by Samoa Global News, a heartrending incident involving a Laumosooi bus in Malifa has left four passengers in a critical state at the Motootua Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Thankfully, there have been no confirmed deaths.
While 27 passengers received medical attention and were subsequently released, one individual among the critically injured is under close medical supervision.
The bus was en route from Matautu, Falealili, when the driver began to experience difficulties in controlling the vehicle near Princessa Shop at Papauta. An elderly witness recalled, “The distress was palpable, evident from the driver’s persistent honking. Instead of navigating the usual turn at Leufisa, the bus sped uncontrollably down the Tanugamanono road.”
The bus, which had over 30 occupants, tragically collided with an oncoming Hyundai Tuscon. The aftermath was devastating, with the bus overturning and splitting in half, causing debris to scatter in front of the Phat Burger establishment.
The location of the accident, close to the Leifiifi College road crossing, is usually bustling with students around 8 am. Fortunately, due to school holidays, a potentially even graver tragedy was averted.
Disturbing security footage from Transam vividly captured the calamitous moment and its immediate aftermath, showcasing the altruism of bystanders rushing to the scene to help. One of the injured passengers shared, “The driver, post-incident, disclosed a brake malfunction.”
This isn’t the first time the Laumosooi bus company has come under scrutiny. Its history is marred with accidents, including a fatal incident that led to a bus driver’s manslaughter conviction. Concerningly, this very bus had previously faced mechanical issues and allegations of reckless driving just a month prior.
As the investigation proceeds, the community waits anxiously for answers and prays for the recovery of those adversely affected.
