Samoa’s Dr. Tufulasi Taleni, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Canterbury, has received two national awards for his contributions to Pacific education. He was honoured with the Pasifika Community Researcher Award at the Community Research Te Auaha Pito Mata ceremony on October 18 and the Pacific Circle Consortium’s Peter Brice Award on October 11. These awards recognise his positive spirit, scholarship, and humanity. Dr. Taleni, the first Pacific staff member with a doctorate degree at UC’s Faculty of Education, expressed humility and a commitment to encouraging more Pacific researchers.
With over three decades of involvement in Pacific education, Dr. Taleni focuses on educational leadership and Samoan epistemology. His research led to the development of the Soalaupulega Samoa framework, emphasising the importance of strong leadership in addressing key issues affecting children, families, and communities. Dr. Taleni advocates for utilising Pacific epistemologies, research methodology, and pedagogical practices to contextualise cultural values and principles.
Born in Samoa, Dr. Taleni moved to New Zealand in 1985. He has played a significant role in improving the engagement and achievement of Pacific students, leading initiatives such as the Pacific Talanoa Centre and the Pasifika Education Initiative – Samoa Malaga. His involvement in introducing the Saili Matagi Pacific course into the UC Initial Teacher Education program demonstrates his commitment to advancing Pacific education. Dr. Taleni’s ongoing roles in his Pacific community, family, and church contribute to his motivation and passion for research. He appreciates UC’s support and looks forward to implementing his framework in policy making and schools to enhance teaching practices.
