Yesterday’s graduation ceremony at Samoa Adventist College was bittersweet for Alofau Rile, who was announced as the dux of his class. The momentous end of his college journey was marked by the absence of his parents, adding a poignant note to his achievement.
Beaming with pride, Alofau walked to collect his trophies and certificates. “It’s quite sad for me,” he admitted. “My parents have contributed so much to my education, and I wish we could have walked together on stage to receive my prizes.”
Alofau excelled academically, securing first place in all six subjects he took, including English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Computing, and Bible. His exemplary leadership skills often led him to represent his school in national youth competitions, such as poetry contests and impromptu speeches, to name a few.
Reflecting on his accomplishments, Alofau expressed immense excitement about his achievements. “With a sense of humbleness, I am so proud of myself. Despite the challenging journey this year, God has been my guide, which is why I am here today,” he said.
“I want to thank my family here in Samoa, my parents in Fiji, my teachers, and colleagues for journeying with me. Despite my parents’ physical absence, as we live apart, I feel their spirit with me. I know I have made them proud,” he added.
Looking to the future, Alofau is eager to expand his knowledge in his field of study at the National University of Samoa next year. He hopes to secure a scholarship to study abroad and specialises in Computer Studies.
When asked to share his advice for other young people, Alofau said, “Youths of today need encouragement and more opportunities to express themselves and actively bring about positive changes in Samoa, as we are the future. Strive for the better, aim high, and work hard. Love our families, church, communities, and the nation. Therefore, prioritise education.”
