Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio recently addressed the complexity of the Israel-Palestine conflict in response to a peace march held in Apia by Samoan citizens. He emphasised the sensitive nature of such international issues and the need for a comprehensive, global perspective.

In his detailed address, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of public awareness about these conflicts. He appreciated the peaceful conduct of last week’s march, underscoring the government’s non-interference as a respect for constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression.

Deputy Prime Minister Ponifasio pointed out that international conflicts like the Israel-Palestine issue are under the domain of international agreements and bodies such as the United Nations Security Council. He stressed that these matters are delicate and have implications for global peace and security.

He also reiterated Samoa’s active role in international affairs, particularly within the United Nations framework. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Samoan representatives abroad, overseen by the Prime Minister, diligently monitor global issues, especially those affecting vulnerable groups like women and children.

Concluding his remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Ponifasio reaffirmed Samoa’s commitment to fostering peace and harmonious international relations through adherence to international laws, treaties, and partnerships. The goal is to mitigate global conflicts and wars.

He noted the opportunity given to the peace march organisers to submit their petition to his office. However, only a few participants were present at the scheduled time.
