Less than a week after delivering his inaugural address in Parliament, Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, a Green Party Member of Parliament, has passed away. Collins, aged 49, was not only a prominent figure in politics but also a respected youth worker and community leader.

Collins’ journey in public service began in Auckland, where he served as a councillor for the Manukau ward and chaired the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board for three consecutive terms, from 2016 to 2022. Despite his roots in the Labour Party, he later aligned himself with the Greens, running for the Panmure-Ōtāhuhu electorate in the last general election.

His recent address to Parliament showcased his deep-rooted connection to his heritage and his commitment to advocating for the marginalised. Born to Samoan parents who immigrated to New Zealand in the 1960s, Collins emphasised the importance of his upbringing in shaping his worldview.

Green Party Member of Parliament Fa’anānā Efeso Collins passed away within a week of delivering his first speech in Parliament.

Collins’ speech also mentioned his dedication to uplifting his community and addressing socio-economic disparities. He denounced policies that perpetuate inequality and called for a more inclusive and equitable society.

While Collins had faced criticism in the past for his conservative views, including opposition to same-sex marriage, he later expressed regret and sought to foster understanding and reconciliation.

Throughout his career, Collins faced adversity, including online abuse and threats, yet remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice and equality. His resilience and unwavering commitment to his principles earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and constituents alike.

The newly-elected MP collapsed during a charity event for ChildFund in Britomart, Auckland, this morning at about 9 am. Emergency services made extensive efforts to revive him, but unfortunately, they were unable to save him. As reported by 1News, “Collins was reportedly in high spirits and joking just moments before he collapsed. In a statement, police confirmed the death.”

Collins leaves behind a legacy of service and advocacy, marked by his tireless efforts to amplify the voices of the disadvantaged and effect meaningful change. He is survived by his wife Fia, his two children, and a grateful community mourning the loss of a dedicated leader.

Fa’anānā Efeso Collins’ passing marks a somber moment in New Zealand’s political landscape, with his absence leaving a void that will be felt deeply by all who knew him and the Pacific Community.
