Communities in Onehunga, Auckland, are coming together to pay their respects to Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, a man who dedicated abundant time to serving and supporting them. Fa’anānā lies at Tipene Funeral Home, adorned with ‘Si’i alofa’ (gifts of love) from the Samoan community.

Pacific media, including Tagata Pasifika producer John Utunga, are highlighting the importance of sharing stories and celebrating Fa’anānā’s life. Utunga, reflecting on his first encounter with Fa’anānā in the 1990s, recognised his potential for bigger things due to his exceptional communication skills and inspiring nature.

Fa’anānā, also known as Collins in wider circles, is a chief in his Samoan villages, Satufia and Satupa’itea, in Savai’i, Samoa. RNZ newsreader Marama T-pole expressed her honour in attending the gathering, noting Fa’anānā’s advocacy for various communities, including Tuvalu.

The funeral is expected to draw thousands on Thursday at the Due Drops Events Centre in Manukau City. Journalists and media personalities recalled Fa’anānā’s willingness to assist, connect, and support them, emphasizing his impact on their careers and the community. The funeral home has issued a road closure plan to manage the influx of mourners, urging the public to be aware of potential congestion between February 26 and 28 from 7 am to 7 pm.
