There is a chance for Dengue Fever to potentially resurface, the decease that is transmitted by mosquitoes from one infected person to another healthy individual.
Dr. Alec Ekeroma of the Ministry of Health reported online concerns about a possible increase in infections, noting garbage accumulation and stagnant water as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, especially considering the recent heavy rain in Samoa just had last week.
The Ministry is now strategising ways to combat the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses and implement preventive measures across the country.
About Dengue Fever, Symptoms and Preventive Measures
Dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding (such as nose or gum bleeding).
In some cases, Dengue fever can progress to severe Dengue, characterised by severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, and difficulty breathing.
There is no specific treatment for Dengue fever, so management focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications.
Preventive measures include using mosquito repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants, installing screens on windows and doors, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed.
Community efforts to control mosquito populations, such as fogging and larvicide application, also play a crucial role in Dengue prevention.
