The school fees for each of the twenty-three students from Faleata II district, who are studying at the NUS Campus and the University of the South Pacific in Alafua, amount to approximately two thousand tala.
These students have appealed to the district committee for the government grant of one million tala, as second part of the fund $160,000, has been allocated.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Muaausa Toleafoa Fiona Uili Talouli, explained, ‘Only a thousand tala each can be allocated for these 23 students fees, but for the remaining part of their fees they will have to cover themselves.’
With the first million, only a few applied in the school fees category, because not many were aware that school fees could be applied for using the fund.
‘At this time, many were aware.’
In the first $160,000 of the initial million, the funds are usually designated for improving the facilities of the Fono Fa’avae office. However, given the outstanding school fees, priority was given to covering fees applications first.
Twenty out of the 23 students attend the National University of Samoa, while the remaining three are enrolled at the University of the South Pacific here in Samoa.
The total of $22,834 have been allocated for student fees.
The students’ spokesperson, Jyerah Saifoloi, expressed gratitude to the Honourable Member of Parliament, the representative of Faleata II district, Leatinuu Wayne Sooialo, and the committee for their consideration and support in their appeal and application.
