Consumer International designates March 15th annually as World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) to shine a light on global consumer issues and champion their fundamental rights and needs. This year marks the 26th celebration of WCRD in Samoa.

The eight basic consumer rights include the;

1. Right to safety,

2. Right to information,

3. Right to choose,

4. Right to representation,

5. Right to satisfaction of basic needs,

6. Right to redress,

7. Right to a healthy environment,

8. Right to consumer education.

To commemorate this significant day, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (Ministry) has adopted the universal theme of “Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Consumers” to foster consumer-business engagement and cultivate a competitive trading landscape through outreach initiatives.

The awareness program was conducted in Salelologa, Savaii on 15th March, targeting consumers, business owners, and students from educational institutions to honour the occasion. The program aims to deepen understanding among consumers, businesses, and the public regarding their rights, responsibilities, and the services provided by the Ministry.

The Honourable Minister, Leota Laki Lamositele Sio, highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about consumer rights and the Ministry’s functions. This awareness is vital for fostering business growth, enhancing exports, attracting foreign investments, promoting fair trade practices, and fostering healthy competition, ultimately leading to increased job opportunities. Crucially, it makes sure that consumers are well-informed about their rights in these areas.

Prior to the WCRD, the Ministry hosted as part of this celebration a series of awareness programs in Upolu (Samusu-Tai, Mulivai Safata, Falefa and Samatau) and Savai’i (Samalaeulu, Sili, Taga and Salelavalu) led by the Associate Minister, Afioga Laga’aia Tiaituau Tufuga.
