The Government is pushing for opportunities for scholarships abroad, specifically for Samoan students interested in maritime studies for careers as sailors.
The initiative was highlighted by the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Olo Afoa Fiti Va’ai, during parliamentary proceedings yesterday.
“We want to increase the number of students entering maritime studies for sailors.
“We want to ensure their specialisation. It is essential for students to understand the high standards required for working on ships.
“However, these specialised skills are not achieved, because of lack of resources.”
We are also looking at bringing in our seasoned sailors who have reached the end of their years of service on boats to teach specialised programs and help enhanced the skills of new recruits.
