In this new era, the youth have instigated a marriage between cultural traditional performance with modern performance styles from outside Samoa.

In an effort to protect our Samoan folklore and dance styles, Samoa Newshub consulted with a teacher of the Samoan Language and History for grades 10, 12, and 13 at Papauta College.

“If these new forms of Samoan entertainment continue to be adopted by some of our youth today, it could ultimately undermine the painstaking efforts our ancestors made to establish our own styles of performance and traditionals.

“Our own songs, poems, stories, dances, and sports should be cherished by the youth, for they carry profound meanings from the past, narrating them,” said Limua’a Vaa Fu’e.

Limua’a is a member of the Faiaoga dance group, who joined in 2008 and traveled to perform in American Samoa that same year.

In 2016, the dance group also traveled to Guam for the Pacific Arts Festival and is preparing for Hawaii in May this year, as confirmed by Sa’u Uila Forrest Time, the Assistant Chief Executive Officer of the Culture Division of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

One of the responsibilities of the Faiaoga Samoa dance group is to invigorate the nation’s culture, not only for our own people but beyond our environment.
