A university in Vermont has awarded an honourary “doctor of literature” degree to Max the cat, a cherished figure on campus, just before the students’ graduation ceremony on Saturday.

Castleton campus of Vermont State University is recognising Max not for his skills in catching mice or sleeping but for his friendly nature.

“Max the Cat has been a beloved member of the Castleton community for years,” the university announced on Facebook.

The well-loved tabby lives with his human family in a house near the main entrance to the campus.

“He decided to visit the campus and began spending time with the college students, who adore him,” said his owner, Ashley Dow. Max has been socialising on campus for about four years, delighting students who often pick him up and take selfies with him. He even joins tours for prospective students who gather near his house, she added.

“I don’t know how he knows to join the tours, but he does,” Dow said. “He follows them around.” Students call Dow “Max’s mom,” and alumni often ask about Max when they return to visit.

Although Max won’t attend the graduation, his degree will be sent to Dow later.

Max’s doctorate of “Litter-ature”, Award.
