Aside from Samoan citizens born abroad, Nelson Meleisea is the first person born in Samoa to compete internationally in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions.

This Samoan athlete is preparing for four major competitions this year and is seeking support from the nation.

Nelson is currently in the Philippines on a veterinary medicine scholarship, and he spoke with Samoa Newshub in an interview:

“These four international tournaments are held in Manila, which is quite far from where I am in the Philippines. I am not asking for much from our country, just whatever amount people can afford and are willing to give. This support will greatly help cover travel expenses, accommodation, and other necessary preparations.”

The tournaments Nelson is preparing for include:

  • PAN ASIAN International Open (2 June 2024)
  • ABU DHABI JIU-JITSU PRO Tour (6 July 2024)
  • ASIA SPORT JIU-JITSU FEDERATION (3 August 2024)
  • ADCC Philippines International Open (6 October 2024)

In 2023, Nelson won two gold medals in the PAN ASIAN International Open, ABU DHABI JIU-JITSU PRO Tour, and ASIA SPORT JIU-JITSU FEDERATION tournaments. He will be competing again this year for more gold medals.

Currently holding six gold medals, he is ranked first in other tournaments. The ADCC Philippines International Open (6 October 2024) will be his first time participating in this competition.

Despite his unique entry into this sport, he has consistently competed in Asia under the guidance of BJ, his coach, representing Samoa.

When asked about his passion for the sport, Nelson shared that he first arrived in the Philippines in 2022 for studies on a scholarship and felt the urge to return to his family.

Some friends introduced him to this sport, which brought him joy. Additionally, he came to study veterinary medicine and works with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Samoa. The physical strength required to handle large animals such as horses and cattle during treatment also fueled his interest in the sport.

Furthermore, he aspires to be the first person to return to Samoa and teach this sport to the nation’s youth, starting with his five daughters.

He currently holds a white belt in Jiu Jitsu and has been competing for a year and a half. He aims to become a renowned competitor in the black belt division, like Gordon Ryan.

Balancing training and studies is challenging, but Nelson expressed:

“It is with humility that I ask for the nation’s support because my heart burns with the desire to serve my country through this sport. Any amount of money received from any Samoan will be accepted with gratitude, and God’s rewards will not be in vain.”

Best wishes for this young man’s endeavors.

Nelson Meleisea hails from Pu’apu’a, Tapatapao, Aleisa, Vaitele-Uta, and Falealili.
