Help is on the way for New Zealanders stuck in New Caledonia due to intense unrest, the government has confirmed.

For over a week, the Pacific territory has experienced violence due to protests against the French government’s electoral reform.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) was waiting for approval from French authorities to send planes for evacuations. Now, they have received the green light. The first of several planned flights will leave New Zealand this afternoon.

A plane will take off shortly after midday to pick up about 50 New Zealanders from the troubled area.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said there are about 290 New Zealanders in New Caledonia.

“New Zealanders in New Caledonia have had a tough few days — getting them home has been a top priority,” Foreign Minister Winston Peters said.

“We want to thank the authorities in Paris and Nouméa for helping make this flight possible.

“The situation in New Caledonia is still changing, and New Zealand officials are working with French and Australian partners to ensure our people’s safety.

“We are planning more flights in the coming days with the help of France and Australia.”

Today’s flight will focus on New Zealanders with the most urgent needs, Peters added.

“Consular staff will decide who gets priority for the next flights.”

Any New Zealanders in New Caledonia who haven’t registered with SafeTravel are urged to do so. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said, “We’ve gotten approval for two Australian Government flights today to help Australians and other tourists leave New Caledonia.

“Passengers will be prioritized based on need. We are also working on more flights.”
