It’s that time of year again; it feels like almost everyone is sick. So, what can you do to stay healthy?

Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora’s clinical director, Dr. Sarah Clarke, shared some crucial advice on 1News breakfast. She emphasized that during the colder months, people tend to spend more time indoors, which leads to a higher transmission rate of respiratory illnesses.

“It’s absolutely important that we prepare for winter,” she explained. “Make sure you have some essentials like paracetamol in the cupboard and honey in the pantry.”

Dr. Clarke also highlighted the importance of consulting health providers, especially for individuals with chronic conditions such as respiratory illnesses or asthma. “Ensure you have a plan in place, so you know what to do if you do get sick,” she advised.

Beyond these preparations, Dr. Clarke stressed the significance of immunizations. “The best protection we have against flu, Covid, and other respiratory winter illnesses is to be immunized, so make sure your vaccinations are up to date.”

In addition to these tips, consider incorporating some extra measures into your routine. Maintaining good hand hygiene by washing your hands regularly, eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest can all contribute to a stronger immune system. Also, don’t forget to keep your living spaces well-ventilated to reduce the spread of germs.

By taking these proactive steps, you can better protect yourself and your loved ones during the cold season.
