Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon Laumatiamanu Ringo Mathew Purcell, Officially Opens the 36th Digicel Marist International Sevens Tournament

The much-anticipated 36th Digicel Marist International Sevens Tournament was officially launched on 7 June at the prestigious Tanoa Tusitala Hotel in Sogi. The event, which marks the beginning of one of the most prestigious rugby sevens tournaments in the Pacific region, was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including the Honourable Minister of Sports and Recreation, Laumatiamanu Ringo Mathew Purcell, who officially declared the tournament open.

In his opening speech, Laumatiamanu stressed the relevance of sports in Samoa, featuring its role in promoting physical fitness, fostering community spirit, and nurturing young talent. He praised the efforts of the Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club in organizing the tournament, noting its contribution to the development of rugby sevens in Samoa and the Pacific region.

The tournament, which will feature teams from Samoa and around the Pacific, promises to be an exciting showcase of rugby sevens talent. Teams will compete over two days, 21-22 June at Apia Park culminating in the crowning of the tournament champion on 22nd. Apart from the on-field action, spectators can look forward to cultural performances, food stalls, and entertainment, making it a festival of rugby and Samoan culture.

The 36th Digicel Marist International Sevens Tournament holds a special place this year as it celebrates its enduring partnership with Vailima, the official beer of the tournament, as announced by the Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club Samoa on Facebook. It is expected to draw large crowds and showcase the best of Samoan hospitality and rugby talent.

As the tournament kicks off, all eyes are on the teams as they vie for victory and the coveted title of champions. The tournament not only promises thrilling rugby action but also serves as a platform for promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie, and the rich cultural heritage of Samoa.
