Government transfers maintenance of District Hospitals to Districts

The maintenance of hospitals located in some of the districts in Upolu has led the government to decide to release this responsibility to the District Councils.

This decision was formalised by the Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Health, Valasi Luapitoifanua To’ogamaga Tafito Selesele, along with the Chairpersons of the District Councils for six constituencies in Upolu.

However, only four District Councils signed today as the other two were not present to complete the signing.

The districts that signed agreements this morning include Safata #1, ‘Ā’ana Alofi #4, Falealili #1, and ‘Ā’ana Alofi #3, while Aleipata Itupā i Luga and Anoāma’a #2 were absent.

Tomorrow (Friday, 6 September 2024), the Honourable Minister and the Districts with District Hospitals will hold another signing ceremony.

In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister explained the reason behind the government’s decision to assign the maintenance of District Hospitals to the District Councils.

“According to the Ministry’s records, a large amount of money was spent on paying various contractors to carry out this work. No less than $10 million has been spent by the Ministry to pay these contractors.

“The government has decided to delegate the responsibility to the villages and districts to ensure the proper upkeep of our district hospitals. In the past, as many of you may know, our hospital in Sātaua was well-maintained thanks to the efforts of the Women’s and Girls’ Committee.

“This is the same principle behind the government’s initiative to hand over the responsibility to the villages, so they can maintain and clean the land properly.
The implementation of this agreement will grant the District Councils authority over who will handle this responsibility, whether it’s the Women’s Committee, the Young Men’s Group, or any other body deemed fit. A budget of $1,500 will be allocated every three months for general maintenance, with $1,500 per month specifically for cleaning the premises.

“The District Council will choose the village in each district to carry out the work, and the money will go directly to those who perform the necessary tasks.”

Valasi also stated that vans will be provided for use by the district hospitals to support their daily operations and to care for the health of our people.

The Minister and the Ministry’s ultimate hope is for this adjustment to be successful, and for each district to appreciate this forward-thinking initiative of our government to keep our district hospitals clean and beautiful.
