Apia, Samoa – A new group of Peace Corps Volunteers has been officially sworn in at a ceremony held on Friday, 20th September 2024, at the Fale Samoa, National University of Samoa. The volunteers, part of Group 94, will work in various schools across the country, focusing on improving English literacy and fostering cultural exchange between Samoa and the United States.
In his remarks, Hon. Seuula Ioane, Samoa’s Minister of Education, Sports, and Culture, expressed deep gratitude for the continued partnership with the Peace Corps. “Today marks the beginning of another transformative journey for this group of volunteers, but it also reflects the enduring friendship between our two governments,” he said.
The Peace Corps program has been active in Samoa since the 1960s and has played a significant role in enhancing English literacy among primary school students. “Samoan students have benefited greatly from firsthand learning experiences with native English speakers,” the Minister noted, highlighting the volunteers’ contributions to instilling a love for reading and writing in local schools.
The volunteers will be integrated into communities where they are expected to not only teach but also engage in a mutual cultural exchange. “The focus on social and cultural values is emphasised, and we are proud to welcome this new group into our workforce,” Ioane added.
Representatives from the United States, including the Charge d’Affaires from the U.S. Embassy in Samoa, attended the event alongside government officials and the Peace Corps Samoa leadership team.
The Peace Corps Chief of Operations for the Inter-America and Pacific Region also attended the event, affirming the continued support of the U.S. government for Samoa’s education sector.
Speaking on behalf of the volunteers, the Peace Corps Country Director for Samoa praised the group’s determination and commitment, saying, “This group has shown unity and solidarity in preparing for their roles, and we are excited to see the positive impact they will bring to their schools.”
The volunteers will begin their assignments immediately, with the aim of contributing to the development of educational outcomes in Samoa.
“We look forward to seeing the combination of talents, skills, and attitudes that these volunteers will bring to our schools,” the Minister concluded.
The ceremony ended with the formal swearing-in of the volunteers, signaling the start of their service in Samoa.
