Tufulele, Samoa – Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa officially opened the newly upgraded freshwater pool and the Women’s and Youth Center in Tufulele on Thursday, 17 October 2024. This marks the completion of a $898,731.43 development project aimed at supporting the community’s access to clean water and providing a dedicated space for women and youth.
The project, funded by contributions from the district council, ADRA, the Bank of the South Pacific (BSP), the Samoa International Finance Authority (SIFA), and other partners, is a significant investment for the village. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying, “This development will serve as a vital resource for the community, particularly in times of drought.”
The new water system replaces the village’s outdated supply, ensuring reliable access to clean water amidst increasing climate challenges. Fiame noted that beyond its practical value, the water system holds cultural significance, being a source of support for the village in times of need. “This is a resource the village can rely on,” she stated, reflecting on the changing weather patterns and their impact on water availability.
The Women’s and Youth Center, built as part of the same project, will be an important space for community initiatives.
“The center will support the development of women and young people in the village and district,” Fiame said, adding that it will serve as a venue for various activities aimed at empowering women and youth in Tufulele.
Fiame also pointed out that the new facilities will be open to both the public and tourists, creating opportunities for local employment and revenue generation.
“This project will not only benefit the people of Tufulele but also contribute to Samoa’s hospitality sector by welcoming visitors,” she added.
The Prime Minister concluded her remarks by encouraging the youth to use their talents and skills to further develop their community.
“May God bless this project,” she said, urging the youth to take full advantage of the opportunities the new center will provide.
The event was attended by village leaders, Cabinet members, and local residents, with Fiame extending her appreciation to all involved in the project’s completion.
