As the boxing world anticipates the 22 February showdown between Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, all eyes are on the potential implications for the heavyweight division. The bout, set to be broadcast live on DAZN, will see Dubois defending his IBF heavyweight title against the former WBO champion Parker.

Oleksandr Usyk, the reigning WBA, WBC, and WBO heavyweight champion, has expressed keen interest in this matchup. Usyk, who made history in 2024 by becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in over two decades after two victories over Tyson Fury, has indicated that he plans to face the winner of the Dubois-Parker fight later this year.

Reflecting on the upcoming bout, Usyk provided his analysis, suggesting a slight advantage for Dubois. He stated, “52 per cent for Daniel and 48 per cent for Parker; that is what my team have predicted.” This assessment underscores the closely contested nature of the fight, with both boxers bringing impressive recent performances to the ring.

Dubois has been on a notable winning streak, securing victories over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua, the latter earning him the vacant IBF title. Parker, meanwhile, has revitalised his career with significant wins against Zhilei Zhang and Deontay Wilder, reestablishing himself as a formidable force in the division.

Oleksandr Usyk celebrates as the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Usyk’s interest in this fight is heightened by his history with Dubois. The two faced off in 2023, where a controversial moment saw Dubois land a shot that was ruled a low blow, leading to a stoppage victory for Usyk in the ninth round. Dubois has since been vocal about his desire for a rematch, aiming to avenge what he perceives as an unjust outcome.

At 38, Usyk has revealed plans to retire after two more fights, both in the heavyweight division. He has dismissed the idea of moving to the newly established bridgerweight class. He’s set on finishing his career at the top.

As the Dubois-Parker fight approaches, the stakes are clear that the winner not only secures the IBF heavyweight title but also sets the stage for a high-profile clash with Usyk, potentially marking one of the final chapters in the Ukrainian champion’s illustrious career.
