For the first time, the Samoa Red Cross Society has provided first-aid training for Samoan seasonal workers heading abroad.
The two-day program, conducted in partnership with New Zealand-based Hortus, equips workers with essential emergency response skills. Hortus, a major employer of Samoan laborers in agriculture, requested the training to ensure workers can handle emergencies while working in remote farm areas.
“There have been many accidents involving our men working in New Zealand and Australia, and some have lost their lives,” said Aiolupotea Goretti Wulf, Health Coordinator for the Samoa Red Cross.
“This initiative prepares them to respond when medical help is not immediately available.”
The 19 men trained this week will depart next week for seasonal work overseas. It is understood that this training will continue in collaboration between Hortus and the Samoa Red Cross Society.
