The Electric Power Corporation (EPC) has announced plans to construct a new overhead power line following recent blackouts caused by a fault in the underground high-voltage transmission cable between Siusega and Fuluasou.

In a statement issued on 26 February, EPC apologised for the power outages that occurred on 23 February and 25 February acknowledging the disruptions faced by customers. The affected transmission line is a key part of the power distribution system, carrying electricity from the main Fiaga power station to substations.

To address the issue, EPC will begin construction of an overhead power line on Friday, 28 February. The project involves replacing the damaged 2km underground cable with a 1.7km overhead line, which EPC says will improve system stability. The existing underground section will be decommissioned, though the underground redundancy line will remain operational. The new overhead line will also follow a different route near the Faleata Golf Course.

EPC stated that these measures are part of its efforts to ensure a more reliable power supply and reduce the risk of future disruptions. The corporation’s technical teams are monitoring the system and working to prevent further outages.

EPC said it will continue to provide updates as the work progresses.
