Jai Opetaia retained his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight titles after delivering a decisive eighth-round knockout against Germany’s Hüseyin Cinkara on the Gold Coast. The fight ended when Opetaia landed a powerful left hand that dropped Cinkara heavily to the canvas, forcing the referee to wave off the contest immediately.

Ringside observers described the knockout blow as a left hand “from the depths of his reserves,” flattening Cinkara, who stayed down for the count as medical staff hurried into the ring. The German fighter was clearly in trouble, but eventually regained his footing and later approached Opetaia to congratulate him. The ABC live report called the finish “a stunning shot” and “astonishing stuff.”

Until the knockout, Opetaia had controlled much of the fight through movement, pressure, and body work, gradually wearing Cinkara down before finding the opening that ended the bout. The win preserves Opetaia’s undefeated record and keeps him firmly positioned at the top of the cruiserweight division.

But despite the emphatic finish, Opetaia was openly critical of his own performance after the fight.

“I feel like I’ve let some people down with that performance,” he said.
“I just feel like I wasn’t myself, I felt like I boxed like shit.”

He said he was frustrated by the number of errors he made throughout the fight.

“There was so many mistakes, I’m so pissed off.”

Opetaia added that his corner was not pleased at times because of those mistakes, and he was clear about what comes next.

“I need to go back to the gym and iron out those mistakes.”
“I’m gunna come back and I’ll be better.”

The victory strengthens Opetaia’s standing as one of the world’s elite cruiserweights and sets up future opportunities for unification. But in his own view, the knockout win is just the beginning of the improvements he intends to make.
