Samoa has secured a new grant from Japan to strengthen weather monitoring across the country, with the funding to be used for automated meteorology weather observation equipment at several locations.

The Exchange of Notes was signed on 26 February 2026 by Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt and Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa, Mr Suzuki Ryotaro, in a ceremony at the Cabinet Chambers. A Grant Agreement was also signed by the Prime Minister and JICA Resident Representative Ms Asakuma Yumiko.

The grant is valued at JPY436 million, about US$2.9 million, and will support Samoa’s Meteorology Division through Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme.

Under the project, automated weather observation systems are to be installed at Faleolo International Airport, Lufilufi, Le Mafa, Togitogiga, Manono, Mt Talu in Sataua, Le Piu in Safotu and Maota Airport.

The equipment is expected to improve the accuracy and reliability of weather monitoring and forecasting in Samoa. It is also intended to strengthen early warning systems and support local preparedness during severe weather events.

The project also supports wider efforts around disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in Pacific Island countries under the PALM10 Joint Action Plan.

Japan also continues to support Samoa in other sectors including education, health, environmental protection, water resource management, infrastructure and human resource development.

The Samoa Government expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan and JICA for their continued support, and said it looked forward to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
