The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG), in partnership with the British High Commission, Apia, today commemorated International Women’s Day through a joint programme celebrating the economic empowerment and resilience of women under the Nofotane Programme.

This collaborative initiative highlights the shared commitment of SVSG and the British High Commission to advancing gender equality and supporting sustainable livelihoods for women in Samoa. Through donor-funded support, Nofotane women have received essential business resources including equipment, tools, and raw materials to strengthen and expand their micro-enterprises.

The event featured a product exhibition showcasing goods developed and improved through this support. Participants proudly displayed sewing and tailoring products, elei printing, handicrafts, catering services products, and other locally made items, demonstrating tangible progress in income generation and business development.

Representatives from both organisations emphasised that economic empowerment is central to achieving long-term safety, independence, and dignity for women.

“International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate progress and reaffirm our commitment to gender equality. When women are given the tools and opportunities to succeed economically, entire families and communities benefit.”

Mr Gareth Hoar, British High Commissioner commented that, “The British High Commission in Apia is proud once again to partner with SVSG through this project “Empowering Nofotane Women Through Sustainable Livelihoods”.”

“The UK stands in solidarity with Nofotane women to drive forward innovation and ensure their work is resilient in the long term. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a global emergency. The UK is ‘All In’ working with women rights organisations to use their public platforms to increase political will, and visibility for VAWG prevention”.

Selected Nofotane women shared personal testimonies of transformation, describing how access to resources and mentorship has enabled them to build confidence, contribute to household income, and plan for a more secure future.

The partnership between SVSG and the British High Commission reflects a broader commitment to supporting women’s leadership, strengthening protection systems, and fostering inclusive economic growth in Samoa.
