The Office of Samoa’s Labour Attaché for Seasonal Employment in New Zealand has advised workers who have travelled for these jobs to avoid placing those who arrange their travel in a difficult position when they want to return home to Samoa because of marital problems.
The notice was issued by the Labour Attaché’s Office after it observed that some workers had gone as far as using the death of a parent, or claiming that one of their children was ill, simply to leave seasonal work before the agreed contract period had ended.
“The first thing the company asks for is a death certificate or a report from the hospital confirming the illness of one of your children or your parents.
Please do not use your children or parents as an excuse to leave and return to Samoa because of a marital dispute with your spouse,” the Labour Attaché’s Office in New Zealand said.
The companies employing these workers first review whether their debts have been settled before they are allowed to travel to Samoa.
It has also been made clear what will happen to any Samoan worker in these jobs who is found handling, using, or selling illegal drugs.
“If you are caught, you will be handed over to the company, and if the matter reaches the Police, you will be charged. As we continue to remind you, if you are found with drugs, the report from our office will be sent directly to Samoa and referred to the Fono Faavae to deal with you when you return.
As for returning to New Zealand again under the RSE scheme, we regret to inform you that you will not be granted another visa because there will be a Police report against you.”
The good name of Samoa is being stressed, especially in light of the trust and support shown by families and villages.
As is already known, districts are now selecting their own people to go into this work, and there is a belief that, apart from Police penalties, there will also be village punishments for those who do not follow the rules of seasonal employment.
