Several families from Vaisigano 1 District in Savaii will receive 12 new 3000-liter water tanks. These water tanks have been provided by the German Embassy in Wellington with the support of the German Consul’s Office here in Samoa. The water tanks will be distributed amongst the villages of Asau, Auala, and Vaisala.

The new German Consul to Samoa, Afoa Stefan Szegedi, stated that this project is a partnership between Germany and the Fono Faavae Vaisigano 1. “The German Embassy in Wellington provided the 12 water tanks, while the Fono Faavae Vaisigano 1 provided the transportation from Apia to Savaii and the installation costs of these water tanks in the respective villages,” said Afoa.

Afoa added, “The villages of Asau, Auala, and Vaisala are in an area which has the lowest average rainfall in Samoa. As the saying goes ‘Water is Life,’ it is vital that the correct infrastructure is in place to ensure the people in these villages continue to have access to water.”

Member of Parliament for Vaisigano 1 and Associate Minister Niuava Eti Leatiogie Malolo expressed the benefits of the water tanks to the district. “Water tanks can store rainwater during the wet season, ensuring that there is a reliable water supply during drier months. This reduces dependence on boreholes and helps mitigate the effects of climate variability,” said Malolo.

Malolo also added, “Investing in water tanks can significantly enhance water security in Vaisigano 1 district, providing a practical solution to the challenges posed by climate change and geological conditions.”

To celebrate the successful conclusion of this partnership project, a ceremony was held at Auala in Savaii. In attendance at the ceremony were the Honorable Associate Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure and Member of Parliament for Vaisigano 1, Niuava Eti Leatiogie Malolo; German Consul to Samoa, Afoa Stefan Szegedi; and representatives from the various villages in Vaisigano 1 District.
