La’auli Schmidt sacked following criminal charges

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Susuga La’auli Leuatea Polata’ivao Schmidt, has been sacked.

This is the most explosive event since the assassination of Minister Luagalau Leva’ula Kamu. This was an unavoidable result.

Mr. Schmidt had been defiant, refusing to resign or step aside when he was charged with ten criminal offences and continued to declare his innocence. La’auli’s sacking has drawn strong reactions from across the nation.

On social media, harsh and divisive responses have been directed at the Prime Minister, who was simply doing her job as required by the Constitution.

There are ministerial standards that must be upheld. The ‘Office’ of the Minister is more important than the ‘Holder.’ Stepping down would have been a more dignified choice than being sacked. La’auli continues to carry the “Presumption of Innocence” until the end of his court cases, and he deserves a fair trial.

La’auli’s termination has sent shockwaves throughout the Samoan diaspora. There will be differing opinions – some supportive, others critical. However, we must keep our focus on Samoa and ask ourselves,

“Is our country’s international reputation as a law-abiding nation more important than the retention of a Minister facing ten criminal charges?”

La’auli’s ability to connect with people has earned him a strong following. His skill in persuasion, often described as a “gift of the gab,” has allowed him to influence many. However, his public accusations of bribery on EFKS TV’s “Soalepule” program against individuals and police officers have exposed him to potential legal action for defamation. These statements have also raised questions about his judgment and the broader impact on public confidence in Samoa’s institutions.

In Parliament, La’auli’s criticism of the Minister of Police and the Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services created further tensions. While some see his actions as courageous, others view them as undermining the unity of the Cabinet and eroding trust in key institutions. This situation reminds us of the need for accountability, but also the importance of respecting institutional integrity.

The Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, acted within her constitutional authority to remove La’auli. Her decision was not taken lightly. It reinforces the principle that public office comes with responsibilities that cannot be ignored.

Samoa must now focus on maintaining its reputation as a nation governed by the rule of law while navigating the fallout from this decision.

As La’auli’s legal battles proceed, he deserves a fair trial. At the same time, this event should prompt reflection on leadership and governance. Samoa’s future depends on trust in its institutions and the accountability of those in power.

The focus must remain on the nation’s welfare and fostering constructive dialogue to move forward.
