Roadside stall boost for farmers and vendors under STODAS project

Farmers and vendors in Upolu received new roadside stall equipment yesterday, as the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries launched its latest support under the STODAS Project.

The project, funded by the European Union and implemented with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was launched at Fugalei Market by Minister Hon. Niuava Eti Leatiogie Malolo Funefeai.

In his speech, the Minister said roadside stalls have long played a role in connecting farmers with consumers, but poor infrastructure often exposed produce to rain, sun, and dust—damaging food and reducing sales.

“From the streets of Apia to the back roads of our villages, roadside stalls are part of daily life,” said Niuava. “But many still lack shelter or basic equipment. Today’s distribution addresses those gaps.”

Items distributed include tents, food-grade containers, display tables, and sanitation gear to help farmers and vendors maintain clean, safe, and practical selling spaces.

Niuava thanked the Samoa Farmers Association (SFA) for their role in coordinating the rollout. He also confirmed that the same support will be provided to vendors in Savai‘i next week.

The STODAS Project (Sustainable Transformation of Domestic Agrifood Systems) focuses on improving local market access, reducing food spoilage, and supporting rural incomes through better tools and facilities.

The event was attended by FAO Pacific Subregional Coordinator Mr Guangzhou Qu, church leaders, district council members, and farmers from around Upolu.
