The government has approved the demolition of the three western grandstands at Apia Park as part of a major upgrade to the nation’s sporting facilities.
Effective immediately, the grandstands will no longer be in use following safety concerns raised in a recent inspection report. Cabinet has endorsed their removal and the construction of a new international-standard sports stadium in their place.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is working alongside the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to engage development partners for assistance with the new stadium build. The plan is part of a broader effort to provide modern facilities for Samoan athletes and sporting events.
The move follows recommendations by the Chinese team currently overseeing the Apia Park Complex’s maintenance. Their report formed the basis of Cabinet’s decision, reflecting the ongoing cooperation between Samoa and China in improving sports infrastructure.
The Ministry says it will ensure a smooth transition during the redevelopment phase and will provide public updates as the project progresses.
