Microsoft has officially retired Skype as of May 2025, closing a chapter on one of the world’s most well-known communication platforms. Users opening Skype now see a notice thanking them for being part of Skype and guiding them to transition to Microsoft Teams for free messaging and calling with their contacts.

The move marks the end of an era for the iconic app, which played a central role in global video calling and messaging for over two decades. Skype first rose to prominence in the early 2000s, long before the explosion of smartphones and modern collaboration tools. Its signature ringtone and blue logo became symbols of internet communication, particularly during the 2010s.

In recent years, however, Microsoft shifted its focus to Teams, a platform originally designed for workplace collaboration but now widely used for personal communication as well. Microsoft Teams offers chat, video calls, and integration with other Microsoft services, making it a natural successor for Skype users.

The on-screen message assures former Skype users that they can continue free messaging and calling using Teams, aiming to make the transition as smooth as possible.

A “Start using Teams” button is prominently displayed, encouraging users to get started right away.

For those who have relied on Skype for years, this change might come with a mix of nostalgia and adjustment. Microsoft has published guidance and resources to help users make the switch, which can be accessed through the Learn more link in the notice.

Skype’s retirement is part of a broader trend where technology companies consolidate services and shift towards integrated platforms.

While Skype’s familiar interface and experience will be missed by many, Microsoft is betting that Teams will carry forward the legacy of global connection, with added features for the modern era.
