The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Niuava Eti Leatiogie Malolo Funefeai, delivered keynote remarks at the Export Training Program held on Wednesday, 15 May 2025, at Elisa Hotel Conference Room.

The event brought together exporters, farmers, and stakeholders from both government and private sectors to discuss export readiness for Samoa’s agricultural products.

The Minister acknowledged the work of exporters and farmers as vital contributors to Samoa’s economy.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of Samoa’s economy. Our families, churches, villages, and the nation rely on it,” said Hon. Niuava.

He highlighted the ongoing challenges in the sector, including climate change, pest and disease outbreaks, and international trade compliance. He reminded attendees of the taro leaf blight outbreak in 1993 and noted that the sector has since developed improved taro varieties for both local consumption and export.

Hon. Niuava also outlined recent progress in the export of frozen products such as yam, giant taro, breadfruit, and bananas, and announced the development of a new packhouse at Atele to meet international standards for export.

The Minister acknowledged the work of the Samoa Export Authority and the Samoa Scientific Research Organisation in helping the sector respond through market development and product innovation.

He encouraged exporters and farmers to continue their leadership and collaboration in order to rebuild Samoa’s strong reputation in overseas markets.

“We must ensure that every shipment speaks of quality, integrity, and pride in our work,” he said.

The program is supported by the World Bank through the SAFPROM Project.
