The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour has received new trade measurement equipment from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat through the Pacific Quality Infrastructure Initiative.

The donation is intended to support Samoa’s legal metrology work, including the checking and calibration of weighing and measuring equipment used in trade. MCIL said the equipment will help improve the accuracy, reliability and consistency of trade measurements across the country.

According to the Ministry, all donated equipment was supplied with calibration certificates issued by laboratories accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities.

The donation was delivered in two phases. The first shipment, received in May 2024, included precision weight sets, stainless steel weights, balances and cast-iron rectangular weights. The second and final shipment, received in May 2026, included a 200-litre volumetric prover and a 15-litre twin trolley volumetric prover.

MCIL is responsible for administering the Metrology Act 2015. The Ministry said access to this type of equipment is needed for the verification of weighing equipment and calibration services, which affect both consumers and businesses in Samoa.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour, Fata Ryan Schuster, thanked the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and its partners under the Pacific Quality Infrastructure Initiative for their support.

He said the assistance will strengthen the Ministry’s work and support Samoa’s efforts to build technical capacity and sustainable economic development.
