The Government of Samoa has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the Pacific as a region of peace following the recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by the People’s Republic of China.
In an official statement issued on Thursday, the Government said it noted with concern the missile launch into the Pacific Ocean on 6 July 2026.
According to the statement, Samoa was informed of the launch through diplomatic channels after it had occurred. China reportedly advised that the exercise was conducted in accordance with international law, was not directed at any particular country and formed part of its routine defence training and capability requirements.
The Government acknowledged Samoa’s longstanding partnership with China, which is also a dialogue partner of the Pacific Islands Forum. However, it stressed that activities with potential implications for regional peace and security must be approached with timely, considered and transparent communication.
Samoa said it remained firmly committed to the principles of the Ocean of Peace Declaration and the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty.
“These reflect our shared aspiration of our Blue Pacific that is defined by peace, stability and respect for the sovereignty and security of all Pacific peoples,” the Government stated.
It also emphasised that the Pacific should not become an arena for strategic competition, but should instead remain a centre for unity, peaceful dispute resolution and regional cooperation.
The Government said Samoa’s friendships with international partners continued to reflect its commitment to peace, regional stability and constructive engagement with all nations.
