The Government of Japan has approved a grant of up to SAT357,797 to support the construction of a new school building for the Samoa Victim Support Group in Tuanaimato.
The funding agreement was signed on Wednesday, 27 August, at the SVSG compound by Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa, His Excellency Ryotaro Suzuki, and SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang.
The project will fund the construction of a new single-storey school building containing a classroom, a livelihood training room, a library and toilet facilities.
According to the Embassy of Japan, the expansion is intended to respond to increasing demand for education and support services provided by SVSG.
The organisation’s existing facilities can no longer adequately accommodate the growing number of children and young people taking part in its programmes.
The new building is expected to provide additional space for learning as well as livelihood training and skills development.
Students, women living in SVSG shelters, teachers and volunteers are expected to benefit directly from the project.
Japan has previously supported SVSG through its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects programme in 2014 and 2020.
The Embassy said the latest assistance continues Japan’s support for SVSG’s work with vulnerable members of the Samoan community, particularly children, women and families.
