The Central Bank of Samoa has issued a public warning over the continued circulation of counterfeit banknotes after fake notes were identified during the processing of bank deposits.
In a public notice dated September 16, the Central Bank said recent reports from members of the public and commercial banks had led to suspected counterfeit notes being submitted for verification.
The Bank is urging people and businesses to carefully check cash before accepting it.
Among the counterfeit notes reported in circulation are 100 tala banknotes carrying the serial numbers JD1276962, JD1276966 and JD1276969.
The Central Bank said people checking cotton paper banknotes should look for key security features.
When a genuine banknote is held up to the light, the watermark should show the profile of the late Head of State together with a bright CBS mark. On 50 tala and 100 tala notes, the see-through window should also appear as a continuous bold strip when held against the light.
Anyone who receives or identifies a banknote they suspect is counterfeit is being advised not to use it.
Suspicious notes should instead be reported promptly to the Central Bank of Samoa or Police. The Bank said prompt reporting would assist authorities with their enquiries and help prevent counterfeit currency from continuing to circulate.
