APIA, SAMOA — French Navy vessel D’Entrecasteaux has arrived in Apia for a port visit that will include maritime cooperation activities with Samoan authorities.
The Overseas Support and Assistance Vessel, known by its French designation BSAOM, is scheduled to remain in the Port of Apia from September 16 to September 19 while travelling from Nouméa, New Caledonia, to Mata-Utu in Wallis and Futuna. The visit has been described as a technical stopover as well as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between France and Samoa. The vessel’s presence in Apia has also been independently reported in New Caledonia.
Upon arrival, members of the ship’s crew rendered military honours to French Ambassador to Samoa H.E. Guillaume Lemoine, beginning a programme of engagements during the vessel’s stay.
According to France in Samoa – La France aux Samoa, activities planned during the visit include a presentation to Samoan authorities on France’s maritime operations as well as exercises on land and at sea with Samoa’s maritime police.
The programme is expected to provide opportunities for Samoan and French personnel to exchange knowledge and experience in maritime operations.
The D’Entrecasteaux is based in Nouméa and forms part of France’s naval presence in the Pacific. BSAOM vessels undertake a range of duties including maritime surveillance and protection, logistical support, assistance to communities and the deployment of police or gendarmerie personnel.
Their work can also include monitoring exclusive economic zones, supporting efforts against illegal fishing, maritime rescue and providing assistance following natural disasters.
The D’Entrecasteaux is 65 metres long and has a displacement of about 2,300 tonnes, with the French Navy listing a crew of 24 sailors and capacity for additional personnel.
The vessel is expected to depart Samoa on September 19 and continue its journey to Mata-Utu.
