Samoa has presented its renewable energy development plans at the Oceania Renewable Power Summit 2026 in Auckland, New Zealand, highlighting ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on imported fuels and strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure.

The summit brings together government representatives, energy companies, investors, utilities, regulators and development partners from across Oceania to discuss renewable energy investment, climate-resilient electricity systems and regional cooperation.

Samoa’s delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molio’o, who is participating in a ministerial panel discussion on the future of renewable energy and opportunities for regional collaboration.

According to a government statement issued on Thursday, 8 October, Samoa is seeking partnerships that can support investment in renewable energy infrastructure, introduce new technologies and develop local technical expertise.

The government’s priorities include solar power generation, battery energy storage and electricity grid modernisation. These initiatives form part of Samoa’s broader development programme under the Pathway for the Development of Samoa (PDS).

Battery storage is particularly relevant to electricity systems that incorporate solar energy, as it allows electricity generated during daylight hours to be stored for use when solar production declines. Modernising the electricity grid is also an important part of accommodating renewable generation and improving the reliability of power distribution.

Samoa’s reliance on imported fuels remains an important consideration in its energy planning. Developing domestic renewable energy resources could reduce exposure to international fuel price movements while strengthening long-term energy security.

At the summit’s opening, Samoa presented a video highlighting its renewable energy journey and its intentions to expand clean energy generation and improve electricity infrastructure.

The government also emphasised the importance of technology transfer, workforce development and long-term local capacity building, indicating that renewable energy partnerships should provide lasting benefits to Samoan communities.

The official statement did not provide updated figures for the proportion of Samoa’s electricity currently generated from renewable sources, the cost of planned developments or the expected completion dates of future projects.

Samoa’s participation in the Auckland summit provides an opportunity to engage with regional partners and potential investors as the country continues pursuing its renewable energy development objectives.
