Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo, is leading the country’s delegation to the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12 to 18 October.

The meetings bring together finance ministers, international financial institutions and private sector representatives to discuss global economic challenges, fiscal policies and development priorities.

According to a government statement issued on Monday, 12 October, Samoa’s participation will include discussions with senior officials from both institutions, alongside ministerial meetings addressing the economic challenges facing small and vulnerable states.

Particular attention will be given to the Pacific region and the role international financial institutions can play in supporting countries facing development and economic pressures.

Samoa’s delegation is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the IMF and World Bank Group to review existing development programmes, discuss implementation challenges and consider future financial and technical assistance.

These discussions are expected to contribute to Samoa’s planning under the Pathway for the Development of Samoa 2027–2031.

The World Bank currently supports seven active projects in Samoa, with a combined value of approximately US$211.4 million. These projects cover health, transport and infrastructure, information technology, environmental initiatives and finance.

Samoa has maintained a relationship with the World Bank Group since June 1974 and has been a member of the IMF since December 1971.

Over the years, the IMF has provided Samoa with economic policy advice, technical assistance and financial support, including assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic to address balance-of-payments pressures.

The annual meetings provide an opportunity for Samoa to engage directly with international financial institutions on existing development commitments and the country’s future economic priorities.
