Brigham Young University recently celebrated the graduation of two students from Samoa who received their PhDs in Biology. Dr Justina Tavana and Dr Tava’ilau Tauala Segi were recognised for their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the field of biology.

Dr Justina Tavana, originally from Samoa, has been studying the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease in Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Her research has focused on collecting DNA samples and developing diagnostic tools for Alzheimer’s disease in Pacific Islanders. Tavana’s fluency in Samoan, English has allowed her to connect with individuals from various cultural backgrounds, which has helped her bridge cultural divides in biology.

Tavana’s advisor, BYU-Hawaii president John S.K. Kauwe, praises her work and abilities. “Tina can connect with all these people in so many ways,” Kauwe says. “She’s the perfect person to do this work.”

Dr Tava’ilau Tauala Segi, another Samoan graduate, has been studying the ecology of invasive plant species in Molokai, Hawaii. Segi’s research has focused on the impacts of invasive plants on native ecosystems and ways to control them. His research has been praised for its potential to help protect Polynesian island’s unique biodiversity.

Both Tavana and Segi’s accomplishments are a source of pride for the Samoan community and the broader academic community. Their contributions to the field of biology highlight the importance of diversity and cultural understanding in scientific research.

As these two graduates move on to the next phase of their careers, we can only expect that their hard work and dedication will continue to positively impact the world of biology and beyond. Congratulations to Dr Justina Tavana and Dr Tava’ilau Tauala Segi on their remarkable achievements!
