Australia’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Samoa, His Excellency Mr. William Robinson, recently presented his credentials to Afioga Le Mamea Tuiletufuga Ropati Mualia, a distinguished member of the Council of Deputies. This event marks a significant step in further strengthening the ties between Samoa and Australia.
During the ceremony, Mr. Robinson emphasised the deep and enduring partnership that exists between the two nations. He spoke about their shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Blue Pacific, underlying the importance of collaboration and mutual respect. Additionally, Mr. Robinson highlighted Australia’s commitment to supporting Samoa’s priorities through locally led solutions, signifying a respectful approach towards Samoa’s autonomy and cultural values.
A notable mention was made of the Bilateral Partnership Arrangement, “Ole Fala Folasia I Lo Ta Va,” signed by Prime Ministers Fiame of Samoa and Albanese of Australia. This agreement is a testament to the mutual recognition of each country’s integral role in the region and their shared stewardship of the Blue Pacific continent.
The arrival of Nafanua III, a symbol of Australia’s commitment, was highlighted as a significant step towards aiding Samoa in protecting its marine resources and combating transnational crime. Mr. Robinson also spoke about Australia’s ongoing contributions to Samoa’s budget and the progression of a labour mobility partnership, showcasing a deepening economic partnership between the two nations.
The High Commissioner expressed Australia’s pride in supporting Samoa’s preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled for October this year. This support includes investments in upgrading Samoa’s Emergency Radio Network and installing a Safer City CCTV system in Apia.
In his remarks, Mr. Robinson also celebrated the cultural, historical, and personal ties between the two countries, acknowledging the contributions of Samoans in Australia, including sports stars in the NRL, and the growing people-to-people links through skills training and scholarships.
Concluding his speech, Mr. Robinson expressed his eagerness to work closely with the Samoan government and people, reinforcing the bilateral ties and cooperation on regional and global issues. He, along with his wife Rosie and their three children, is looking forward to being part of the Samoan community, learning about the culture and faith, and experiencing the beauty of Samoa.
