Apia, Samoa – In a recent event that blended spirituality with public service, the Ministry of Customs and Revenue of Samoa hosted a combined Thanksgiving Service and International Customs Day 2024 commemoration on January 26, 2024. The event underscored the importance of integrity and transparency in public service, with a strong emphasis on faithfulness and honesty.

Namulauulu Apelu Ioasa, Assistant Chief Executive of the Ministry’s Internal Audit Division, spearheaded the service. He emphasised the necessity of maintaining a ‘spiritual fire’ in public service, highlighting the virtues of faithfulness, integrity, and honesty. The service also included a dedication to seek divine blessings and guidance for the year ahead.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa, Hon. Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, delivered a keynote address expressing gratitude for the Ministry’s achievements in the past year, particularly noting a significant $60 million surplus in the first half of the current financial year. He challenged the Ministry to continue working with confidence and pride, recognising their role in serving the greater good and making a considerable impact on the Samoan people. Hon. Tuala’s address concluded with a tribute to all Samoan Customs officers, wishing them a Happy International Customs Day.

Afioga Fonoti Talaitupu Lia Taefu, the Chief Executive Officer, officially launched the theme for International Customs Day 2024: “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.” This theme stresses the importance of fostering and sustaining partnerships for mutual success, starting with the foundational partnership among colleagues.

The International Customs Day, an annual event celebrated worldwide, highlights the critical role of Customs in border security. Samoa Customs has planned various activities in line with this year’s theme, focusing on enhancing stakeholder relationships both locally and internationally. These activities include agency consultations, awareness sessions, and the implementation of relevant frameworks governing customs work.

Afioga Fonoti concluded the event with a poignant message from the day’s bible reading, suggesting that to keep the ‘proverbial fire lit,’ the Ministry must enter 2024 unburdened by the ‘ashes of the past,’ symbolising a fresh start and renewed commitment.
